Earlier today Apple held its “annual” September media event. The focus is usually on updated iPods and new iTunes releases. Today Apple also announced a major overhaul of Apple TV, some key new features coming in versions 4.1 and 4.2 of it’s Multi-Touch iOS operating system for mobile devices, and a few other details.

A few in-depth points before reading further:
Today Steve discussed iPad and during the announcement of iOS 4.2 due in November he said that 4.2 would bring all of the great features of the new iOS to iPad, and then listed the features including HDR photos. Now as we all know there is currently no camera built in to the iPad. Was this a slip? Possibly, or it could be just a mistake. Either way we’re interested.

Secondly, as the keynote took place today, we counted at least 5 of the top trending topics on Twitter which were related to the product updates and the Apple media event.

Third, when showing the demo for iTunes 10, there was a new vertical layout for the buttons in the top left to minimize, and so forth. This was later confirmed when the new iTunes page popped up on Apple’s web site. This used to be the standard format for the mini player but now appears to be standard across the board for iTunes.

Now for the notes from today’s event. Take a deep breathe, there is a lot to read. Continue reading »

It seems that just days after I caved and sold my iPhone 3GS (for much less than I could have had it been jailbroken), Comex and company (the iPhone Dev Team) has released a jailbreak tool for iOS 4. Needless to say, I wish I had held out and turned a profit on my iPhone 4 upgrade as I have in the past. Video and all of the details after the break. Continue reading »

The impact of the iPad has been nothing less of breathtaking. In yesterday’s financial conference call, Tim Cook admitted that the iPad was not following the typical adoption pattern of new products. The graph below shows where the iPad ranks in comparison to other Apple products.

If it weren’t for the methodical practice of keeping user interfaces relatively standard across hardware, we have to wonder if the iPad would have had such a rapid adoption rate. Why do you think everyone is scooping up the “oversized iPod Touch”?

It seems the iPad is making an impact in the business world. Bloomberg Businessweek profiled the iPad this week and the reach it has already made into the business market.

Apple, known for courting consumers with sleek designs and easy-to-use software, is making inroads with corporations that say the iPad can make workers more productive without putting sensitive customer information at risk. SAP (SAP), Tellabs (TLAB), and Daimler’s (DAI:GR) Mercedes-Benz are using the tablet-style computer for tasks as varied as accessing work e-mail, approving shipping orders, and calling up on-the-spot auto-finance options.

Apple has announced that in just 80 days they have sold through 3 million iPads. This is not surprising given the availability of the device is  constantly at least 7-10 days out. Below is from the official press release:

Apple® today announced that it sold its three millionth iPad™ yesterday, just 80 days after its introduction in the US. iPad is a revolutionary and magical product that allows users to connect with their apps, content and the Internet in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.

“People are loving iPad as it becomes a part of their daily lives,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more people around the world, including those in nine more countries next month.”

Constant jokes about the iPad being just a large iPod Touch may have a tough time continuing to be funny with such impressive sales figures. Apple is having trouble manufacturing enough iPads to support demand for the new mobile computing product. I’m beginning to wonder if the new features of the iPhone 4 will have any impact on the extremely high demand of the iPad. What do you think?
